This Bulova has as lot of things going for it. First, it’s a great looking open heart that isn’t over styled; It’s competitively priced, clocking in somewhere around $300 – $350; it’s built well, like every other Bulova I’ve reviewed to date. The two-handed dial is unique and presented beautifully, as is the rose gold case and the laser-etched backplate. In every respect, the Heritage 40 demonstrates the care that went into its design and build. Priced alongside comparable quartz watches from Swiss and Japanese watchmakers, the Heritage 40 absolutely deserves your consideration if you’re wanting a dress watch that’s different but still classic.
The Accutron II Alpha is a unique watch. Already rare to see a skeletonized dial on a quartz timepiece, Bulova takes it even further with a distinctive case to match. This version is arguably the youngest, with its black on black color scheme managing to be both quieter and louder than some of the more conventionally-styled versions. Regardless, it’s an excellent watch and a definite conversation piece. Recommended.
The Alpinist came as a true shock: a great looking, well-spec’d automatic from a world-class manufacturer. It’s comfortable to wear, durable, reliable, and accurate. In the USA and Canada, it’s also an uncommon watch to find. The best part of all of this is its price, coming in well under $400. Great work, Seiko.
There will be some notable changes between the production version and the one reviewed here, though they don’t change what the Heritage Edition is: a tremendous value, where you can factually have your cake and eat it too. It’s made of everything it should be to be good, and its sub-$500 price makes it excellent.
I’ve been wearing the Heritage Edition from Hastings & Co. for eight hours now, and I have to say that I’m quite enjoying it.
This is a watch that combines some of the best elements of an automatic movement with the timekeeping accuracy and reliability of a quartz movement. Once charged, the SKA553’s kinetic movement keeps a six month power reserve. If this watch will be a daily wearer, I recommend it wholeheartedly; if this watch will be part of a larger collection, perhaps consider whether or not you want a kinetic movement at all…
The Infantry Vintage Chronograph is designed to do its job and do it well. Excellent visibility – day or night – and solid build means that you can confidently wear this watch almost anywhere. This is an excellent watch for someone that wants a chronograph and wants something that will work and look like new for many years.
My experience with the Citizen CA0427-08E is mixed. I’m not a big fan of how it looks overall- they tried a little too hard to be techno-sporty. With an MSRP of $295, they are also on the expensive side of entry-level quartz chronograph, and the fact is that I’m not sure I’d spend $300 on this watch. Technically it’s a good watch, and if you like how it looks, I suppose that’s all that matters.
Hamilton has priced the Khaki Field right. At $500 it offers a sapphire crystal, a Swiss-made ETA 2824-2 movement, and a date display. Hamilton is known for quality of craft, and the Khaki Field is another example of that. I’m not a fan of the strap it ships with, but that’s an easy fix and doesn’t sour my opinion of an otherwise fine watch.
The dial on the 96A101 is a little polarizing, but that’s the only fault I can really find in this Bulova. The open heart display gives you a constant reminder of what lies beneath the surface, and the fact that this watch is built as well as it is means you’ll probably be looking at it a lot. Found for under $400… it’s a good buy. Found under $300 and it’s a great buy.
