This Bulova has as lot of things going for it. First, it’s a great looking open heart that isn’t over styled; It’s competitively priced, clocking in somewhere around $300 – $350; it’s built well, like every other Bulova I’ve reviewed to date. In October 2013 I picked up an automatic Delphi Acheron from Stuhrling Original. How has it help up in the nearly 3 years since? Only one way to find out!
The two-handed dial is unique and presented beautifully, as is the rose gold case and the laser-etched backplate. In every respect, the Heritage 40 demonstrates the care that went into its design and build. Priced alongside comparable quartz watches from Swiss and Japanese watchmakers, the Heritage 40 absolutely deserves your consideration if you’re wanting a dress watch that’s different but still classic.
The Accutron II Alpha is a unique watch. Already rare to see a skeletonized dial on a quartz timepiece, Bulova takes it even further with a distinctive case to match. This version is arguably the youngest, with its black on black color scheme managing to be both quieter and louder than some of the more conventionally-styled versions. Regardless, it’s an excellent watch and a definite conversation piece. Recommended.
The Alpinist came as a true shock: a great looking, well-spec’d automatic from a world-class manufacturer. It’s comfortable to wear, durable, reliable, and accurate. In the USA and Canada, it’s also an uncommon watch to find. The best part of all of this is its price, coming in well under $400. Great work, Seiko.
If the Bambino is the proverbial bulls eye, the Symphony lands just short of the inner circle. It’s powered by the same Caliber 48743 automatic that Orient fits in the Bambino, and it’s built just as well, but it doesn’t quite hit the mark aesthetically. Because of this, it always seems to sit in its better-looking cousins shadow. It’s not a bad watch by any technical means, just make sure you’ve checked the Bambino out before you pull the trigger on the Symphony.
The P2/01 is definitely a statement watch, but wow- what a statement it makes! I’ve never seen a watch get people interested in it like this SEVENFRIDAY does. Even if they aren’t “watch people”, almost everyone who sees the P2/01 thinks that it’s good looking. At 47mm it’s among the largest I’ve worn, but I don’t think that’d keep me from buying it. It’s a very cool watch all around.
Orient hit the nail on the head with the Bambino V2. This is a great looking watch, and of the three versions of the Bambino, I think that the V2 is the best looking. The quality of its build is evident all over, with no corners cut in its construction. Overall, the Bambino is an excellent watch. I recommend it.
You can find the Visodate Heritage in a few flavors, though this model (T019.430.16.031.01) is easily the best looking. The steel on brown color scheme is understated and fits into any ensemble. It’s comfortable to wear, durable, and built to last. This is another great watch from Tissot.
The Symphony Eclipse Horizon, as it’s dramatically called, is a ridiculous watch. The 47mm case is monstrous, and the translucent sections of the dial give it even more wrist space. The sparse use of color makes the watch feel more techno-punk than world traveler, but I think that’s kind of the point… which is odd, given that it’s got two separate movements for each dial. Like all Stuhrling’s, you’ll find it’s street price is around $120 as opposed to its $595 “MSRP”.
The Holst is an attractive minimalist timepiece, monotone in color and free from anything that would detract from its spartan aesthetic. I quite like it. It’s affordable and keeps good time, and despite being frustrating to set the date, it’s a pretty straightforward watch to use. It’s sleek, thin, and looks good with just about everything. I wear mine all the time.
Castle Watch Co. is a small growing brand with a lot of potential. They’ve done some nice things with the Corbel; from a reliable quartz movement and unique details on the case. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to start or build his or her collection with this understated, affordable piece.
In my mind, the Tissot T-Complication Squelette sets the standard for how affordable skeleton watches should be done. Its dramatic design and consistent attention to detail create something that captures the interest of anyone – be they a “watch person” or not. More than good looks, it is an example of Swiss watch making at its best. Of all the watches I’ve reviewed to date, this one is my favorite.
For the money these nato straps are excellent. They’re comfortable, durable, made well, and look great. The variety is significant and makes it easy to find a new look for your favorite timepiece.
Timex’s all-new Fairfield is a good addition to the Weekender line, though it’s considerably more expensive than other versions of the Weekender. If you live in the USA, where you can easily find the Fairfield for under $60, it’s a good buy. If you live in Canada, where it’s $95 and up, you have to really like the Fairfield for the value proposition to make sense- as a Canadian, I don’t know if I think it does.
