Timex Expedition Scout Review: Go On An Adventure!

Since 2013 I’ve reviewed almost every line Timex has released, but absent from the list has been the Expedition Scout. Finally, in a Black Friday inspired impulse buy, I decided to change that.

The Expedition Scout comes in many flavors, all of which are a variation of field watch theme. Military-inspired styling is evident as well, but especially so in some of the darker color schemes. The blue dial and tan leather combination I have here offers a taste without going whole-hog on the austere often associated with military style.

Timex is one of my favorite watch brands and it’s with that context that I write this review of the Command, a 54mm wrist-dominating plastic and camo digital watch from the American king of digital watches.

Long guarding its pervasive position as the “tough watch” segment leader, Casio now finds itself directly in the crosshairs of Timex. The Command is Timex’s answer to the G-Shock, and there’s no mistaking that Timex clearly has the G-Shock in its sights.

The Waterbury collection is Timex’s dressier line of affordables, with timeless styling and a multitude of options in terms of sizes, straps/bracelets, and color schemes. On my wrist here is the is the Classic 36mm in rose gold and brown crocodile-grain leather (model: TW2R72500VQ), which is a unisex dress suitable for most occasions.

With an MSRP just north of $100, the Waterbury Classic is an affordable and upscale looking watch that fits in most circumstances. Thanks to its size, it’s also a unisex watch that is equally comfortable on the wrist of a man or a woman (as Melissa and Don demonstrate here).

A fine chronograph but could be better, the Intelligent Quartz Flyback Chrono feels crowded and misses the mark in how its complications are displayed. I wanted to wear an IQ for a while and I’m glad I did, but this is one Timex that won’t remain a member of my collection. How about you- is the IQ a good fit for your collection?

The Easy Reader series from Timex is quite popular. According to SEMRush, the keyword “Timex easy reader” is searched nearly 2,000 times per month in the USA on its own– nevermind all the permutations of it. When considering Canada and the UK, as well as variations of “Timex Easy Reader”, monthly search volume climbs to north of 12,000 searches per month. Suffice to say, it’s a popular piece.

Why it took me so long to order one off of Amazon (this one is a gift for my father in law) I don’t know, but here we are: Timex Easy Reader on the wrist, and with great things to say. Let’s check it out.

Timex’s all-new Fairfield is a good addition to the Weekender line, though it’s considerably more expensive than other versions of the Weekender. If you live in the USA, where you can easily find the Fairfield for under $60, it’s a good buy. If you live in Canada, where it’s $95 and up, you have to really like the Fairfield for the value proposition to make sense- as a Canadian, I don’t know if I think it does.

The Expedition Field Chronograph is a good watch, even if the quirks of the watch make it a little clunky to use. If you’re picky or particular, the chronograph movement might drive you a little bonkers. Other than that, it’s proven itself durable and if you like its military-inspired looks – as I do – it’s a great watch to wear. I recommend it.

The Timex Weekender series are my favorite watches for their price points. I don’t believe you can get a better value or a better looking watch for the same money. The Weekender 40 (model: T2P4959J) comes with no complications and it doesn’t need any- it’s already the best bang for your buck out there.

With date display, a day/night indicator, and a power reserve display, the T2M979 is a complicated automatic at a low price point. Be aware that the automatic movement is of unknown origin, but is likely a Chinese-manufactured DG28. If you’re specifically looking for an inexpensive, complicated auto, consider this Timex. Otherwise, there are better watches worth considering at this price point.

Timex T2N289 Automatic

The Sea Gull ST16 movement used inside the T2N289 is pretty good and well-known in the affordable watch world. Timex did a good job styling the T2N289, though the build quality is average at best. If you can find it priced around $150 or less it’s good value, too. I’ve seen it as high as $250, and frankly, it isn’t worth anything close to that.
